The
combined effort of farming trees - carbon credits for soil carbon
sequestration -
and going solar on every rooftop -
is achievable within years which addresses the 10 year "Stern"
time-frame - which Al Gore also targets.
Deep-rooted
perennials are long lasting trees and plants that have a root system
that is larger than the tree.
Ploughing the soil releases the CO2 stored back into the atmosphere -
just like trees that decompose or are burnt - that's why
perennials are so useful - because the farmer doesn't have to
plough and re-plant every season - which also saves on fuel and
machinery.
The perennial plant stays in the ground and the roots keep on growing.
Farmers will get paid "not to plough" the fields as they perform the
job of soil carbon sequestration.
CO2
sequestration is possible on a global scale with renewable farming.

"The
concept of using soil as a carbon sink is potentially the largest sink
in the
world that can be easily accessed by direct human action,"
Dr
Christine Jones B.Sc.PhD.
“It
would only require a 1pc increase in soil carbon on 15 million hectares
of land to sequester 8GT of carbon dioxide in the soil, which is
equivalent to the greenhouse emissions for the entire planet,” Dr Jones
said.
"The
soil test involves taking 110cm cores for testing and a 0.15pc increase
in soil carbon would be equivalent to adding 23.1t/ha of carbon,
earning a healthy $21.19/ha per year.” Dr Jones
said.

Coalition
"We
urge governments and the business
community to
acknowledge the role
that agricultural soils can play in addressing the Global Warming
crisis. Farmers can play a central role in sequestering carbon in their
soils by fostering deep-rooted
perennial plant species that have
significant biomass in their root systems."

We may
even acquire the skills to plan, to look into the future and
"adjust" the amount of sequestration (cooling) required and thereby
regulate some sort of balance to compensate for Earth Changes.
Of
course this may imply we can continue our CO2 habit - but taking into
account China and India are coming on-line exponentially expanding
energy useage -
we may only be able to re-balance the system with extreme action.
If the farmers and governments of the world pull together, rapidly, we
can buffer the tide of global warming.
